God Desires to Be Our Guiding Light

As our Heavenly Father, God desires to lead and guide us. He wants to be our guiding light in every moment of life – this precious gift we are given to enjoy here on earth. The delightful fellowship of His presence is available to each of us. Scripture clearly shows that God is with us, among us, and in our midst at all times.

If we consider that God is – with us – rather than “in me” or “in you”, our eyes are opened to see differently. Seeing merely from an “in me” perspective can tend to foster a self-centered focus toward one another and life itself.

Realizing God was indeed “with them” turned the world upside down
for first-century followers of Jesus Christ.

Just as they excitedly grasped this marvelous truth, God encourages us to do likewise. Seeing life from the “God with us” perspective, we can know He’s there; wherever we go and whatever we do.

We are then able to worship Him freely. This will naturally turn our worship and attention to God’s presence in our midst rather than on the values of the people around us. This is a very freeing perspective because it can release us from incomplete perceptions we may be carrying. If I adhere only to the belief that God is “in me” or “in you” or “in that guy”, it hurts my perception of God’s presence when “that guy” messes up. It can even encourage us to hide our own imperfections rather than work on improving our short-comings.

Instead, a “God with us” view enables us to get out of the judging / comparing trap where we feel compelled to argue our point of view. It’s not “what we believe” that bonds us as offspring of God; rather, the “love and light of God” is our bonding factor. As we mature, all our views tend to change.

God’s Nature

Let’s examine the term, “love and light of God” as we consider His nature. Surely, we can’t pin down the nature of God as if He can be analyzed or calibrated. God has no beginning or ending. He is ever-present, all powerful, always mindful, and our natural eyes can only see His expressions.

The more we understand light and time, the more humbled and in awe we are when we read how these biblical expressions are used to describe God.

“God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” (1 John 1:5)

“God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16)

As we open ourselves to God’s light of illumination, our lives are improved. No; not in an instant (though we may wish it could be so). Rather, God influences and leads us step by step through our life journey. This developmental process improves both the natural and spiritual sides of our life.

Every one of us is a spiritual being. Each of us has spirit since the spirit of life within us comes from the Spirit of God. We are both natural and spiritual, whether we know it or not. It is the spirit in us that seeks to experience the light and love His presence brings. God designed us this way so we can communicate with Him, receive from Him, and become better extensions of His love and light.
